The wedding festivities of Prince Dara Shikoh (February 1633), the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, consisted of a series of events. The most conspicuous Indian element (depicted in this painting), was the ceremonial covering of the bridegroom’s face with a sehra (veil), a custom intended to avert the effects of the evil eye.
While a common bridegroom’s sehra would usually be made of a fillet with miniature flower garlands, more precious materials were used by the well to do. Dara’s sehra consisted of strings of pearls interspersed with gems; it was a family heirloom, which had already served for Shah Jahan’s own wedding.
The ceremony took place before the actual marriage (nikah) on the evening of 12 February 1633, on the riverfront terrace of the Agra Fort. The emperor is shown holding the sehra against his son’s face. In the courtyard below, dancers and musicians perform by the light of large, two armed candlesticks. In the background, on the bank of the river Yumuna, elaborate fireworks give the painter occasion to show atmospheric night effects.

Refund Policy
Our return policy is simple. Within 15 days of receipt of your order, you may return
- Any book in its original condition.
- Any unopened CD, DVD, VHS tape, or software.
- Any other merchandise in new condition, with its original packaging and accessories.
for a full refund (less shipping and handling). Please note that we can process returns and refunds only for items purchased from IslamiCity.
How to Return Items
To return any book, CD, DVD, VHS tape, software, or other, no call is required.
Simply indicate the reason for your return, include the packing slip with your return, and wrap the package securely. Attach the return label from the front of your packing slip and ship to the address indicated on the label. For your protection, we recommend that you use UPS or Insured Parcel Post for shipment. No refund will be issued to items not received by IslamiCity. It is the customer's responsibility to make sure that the items are returned securely and in good condition.
If you do not have your packing slip, please indicate the order number on a separate piece of paper and send the package to the following address:
